There are many different types of scanners available in the market. Some document scanners incorporate a glass flatbed with an integrated automatic document feeder, known as an ADF, these are generally larger than those sometimes found on copiers or multi-function printers. The larger the capacity of the hopper on the ADF, then usually the faster the feeder. Scans are made at high speed, perhaps 20 to 150 pages per minute, often in greyscale, though the vast majority of scanners do support colour scanning selected through the software.
When scanning large quantities of documents, speed and paper handling are very important, but in a graphic application be mindful that resolution is not sacrificed for speed alone Good resolution is also very important for the reproduction of high clarity pictures and images. There is scanner software available to capture the best, quality images and these images can be edited and integrated with document management solutions.
The scanning or digitising of paper documents for storage requires different types of document scanners for different user needs. For instance, different scanning equipment would be used for the scanning of photos for reproduction, than for those in the legal and medical industries where users may require a document identification number or perhaps the date and time of the document scan. While documents can be scanned on general purpose scanners, it is more efficiently performed on dedicated document scanners. PROSCAN offers a range of different scanning equipment to meet the different needs of these two user groups. PROSCAN has film and negative scanners ideal for the scanning of photos and x-ray scanners suitable for users in the medical field.
Many scanners can scan both sides of double-sided originals (duplex operation). Sophisticated document scanners have firmware or software that cleans up scans of text as they are produced, eliminating accidental marks and sharpening text and images. Files created are then easily compressed.
The resolution used is usually from 150 to 300 dpi, this produces images of text good enough to read and for optical character recognition (OCR), but can be greater depending on the type of scanner, for instance in the case of graphic scanners, without the higher demands on storage space required by higher-resolution images. Document scans are often processed using OCR technology to create editable and searchable files. Most scanners use ISIS or TWAIN device drivers to scan documents into TIFF format so that the scanned pages can be fed into a document management system that will handle the archiving and retrieval of the scanned pages.
While paper feeding and scanning can be done automatically and quickly, preparation of documents is still necessary. Preparation involves manually inspecting the papers to be scanned and making sure that they are in order, unfolded, without staples or anything else that might jam the scanner.
